Proposal for Presentation
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, the literacy crisis in America continues on. Ranking of average literacy scores according to racial groups has remained consistent for decades with BIPOC students trailing at the lowest end. And yet, about 78% of teachers are White. This reality has translated to school systems and classrooms that fail to take into consideration the historical, economic, sociopolitical, and moral components that play a role in teaching students of color. There is a desperate need to disrupt the methodology of literacy instruction and a critical solution is to have more teachers of color.
