This presentation is a comparative case study of a series of lawsuits involving Adventist institutions in North America. Why were these lawsuits filed? What were the outcomes of these litigations? What lessons educational leaders can learn from these legal challenges? The following cases will be considered:

  1. Ruth L. Rivers v. Oakwood College (1983)

  2. Parraway v. Andrews University (1984)

  3. Beth Arriaga v. Loma Linda University (1987)

  4. Columbia Union College v. State of Maryland (2001)

  5. Tarsha Baker v. Union College (2002)

  6. Cheyenne Greggs v. Andrews University (2003)

  7. Three former employees v. La Sierra University (2011)

  8. Marsha Booth v. Walla Walla University (2011)

  9. Elyvanie Mukangoga v. Loma Linda University (2014)
