WELCOME
Dear Faculty,
Faculty Institute—a day-and-a-half event to mark the beginning of the academic year and provide professional development—is now a permanent fixture on our academic calendar. The theme for this year’s Institute—Live Wholly: Explore! Engage! Create! —recognizes (i) the University’s commitment to educating the whole person, (ii) our obligation to nurture students to find their place in and make contributions to their world, (iii) the global reach of our community and our commitment to internationalize the curriculum as we prepare our students to serve anywhere in the global community, and (iv) our pledge to create an academic culture where deep learning occurs.
This year’s Faculty Institute is the launch of an intentional plan to support faculty development via a range of workshops throughout this academic year. Many of our presenters are faculty, a choice by the Professional Development Committee that recognizes the giftedness of our academic community. We are also pleased to have our new president as our opening plenary speaker to share her vision on the Andrews’ Philosophy of Christian Scholarship. Also, we continue to have highly recognized professionals as featured presenters and workshop facilitators. They will add to the intellectual stimulation of our academic community.
You, the faculty, are at the core of our academic community. The teaching and learning environment relies on your skills, knowledge and creativity. Our reputation in research depends on your willingness to engage in, create and sustain a culture of scholarship and inquiry. Our call to Live Wholly emphasizes that as a spiritual community, our success is measured by the extent to which students see how you, their mentors, live lives of faith within your disparate disciplines.
Thank you for what you do so well, every day. This Institute is one way of expressing our gratitude. We hope it gives you a broader repertoire of strategies to enhance the teaching-learning experience.
Our hope is that you will gain some new perspectives and ideas over the next day and a half, and that as a result of this shared time together we will be an even stronger academic community. We ask for your feedback. Please let us know what we did well, what we can do better, and share with us your ideas for future workshops and Institute sessions.
Thank you for your work. You are a valued member of our Andrews University academic community.
Sincerely,
Christon Arthur, Associate Provost, Dean, School of Graduate Studies & Research
