Abstract (For book reviews see instructions below)
community (2 Pet 1), contrasted with those of the false teachers (2 Pet 2), are applied to a truth versus error issue (2 Pet 3). The theme developed in 2 Peter of “growing in knowledge” may be viewed as relational, performative, and consequential. The Christian disciple is equipped to “be not deceived” and to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Pet 3:17–18 NIV)—both in the discernment and proclamation of truth. I propose that Peter’s message speaks to theological discourse, how members of the learning community who pursue biblical theology engage one another with a shared intention to effectively pursue the truth. Cross-disciplinary conversations on information literacy and sociality prove informative in applying this understanding of theological discourse. The metaphor of information literacy proves helpful in distinguishing the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that transform the learner into an expert. The metaphor, applied to theological discourse, clarifies the interpersonal relationships between learner and teacher and posits a learning community. The metaphor of sociality with the we-mode versus the I-mode distinction proves informative in making sense of the border between the faith community and the false community. The virtue of love characterizes the virtuous learning community, especially evident when human limitations result in theological disagreements, while the false community is characterized by greed, oppression, and addiction.
