A Phenomenological Study of Women Leaders in Adventist Higher Education Institutions

Using purposive sampling techniques, this phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of 6 women who served as presidents of Adventist Higher Education Institutions, to uncover how they were able to become one of the few women presidents. Data was collected through interviews, observations/shadowing, field notes/researcher’s journal, the Leadership Practice Inventory–Self by Kouzes and Posner (1995), demographic survey sheet, and curriculum vitae. The findings revealed that the participants had positive experiences with parents, teachers, role models, and male mentors who influenced their leadership development. Interestingly, they did not struggle to earn the positions as presidents but rather felt led by God to that role. The participants also shared their academic qualifications, their significant relationships and experiences, their personal and professional characteristics as a good leader, mixed leadership styles and practices, and their personal and professional barriers. A unique finding is that they also used overlapping elements of servant leadership and transformational leadership even though they did not identify themselves as servant leaders. Further, they also shared their advice to women who aspire for top leadership positions, specifically as presidents at Adventist Higher Education Institutions.

In this study, we examined (a) the college of experiences of graduates of Adventist colleges/universities and Adventist graduates of public colleges/universities; (b) the extent to which current religious and community involvement, life satisfaction, and denominational loyalty may be related to college experience; and (c) the factors related to successful transition of graduates (all Adventist except one) from public high schools to Adventist higher education.

Creating a culture for African American young adults in Seventh-Day Adventist Church leadership in San Bernardino County

"The history of youth ministry in the African American church in the U.S. has always had young adults leading and taking action. In San Bernardino African American churches, that is not the case. Reasons such as fear, pressure, and lack of peer group have kept many young adults from wanting to be in leadership in their local church. The local church should be the place where emerging adults can be valued, supported and developed. By using the human resource frame and the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, local churches can create a new paradigm for leadership transfer that includes and empowers emerging adults. This process of leadership should be reproducible and transferable to create a culture that breeds young adult leadership."
