Students with Trauma Backgrounds and Teacher Self-Efficacy

Presentation Length

40 minutes

Abstract

In response to my own experiences and the growing global reality of conflict, I conducted four IRB approved case studies involving international students from countries experiencing conflict or war, looking at whether their perceived needs and resources were being met and valued in college writing classrooms. One significant finding indicated that there was a lack of self-efficacy that some of their teachers expressed in working with students who have trauma backgrounds. This proposed interactive session will give practical pedagogical recommendations for higher education teachers based on the participants’ perceived needs and resources, trauma informed writing pedagogy practices and refugee literature.
