WELCOME

Dear Faculty,

Faculty Institute—Welcome to the sixth annual Faculty Institute! This is becoming a rich Andrews University tradition. This day-and-a-half professional development event marks the beginning of the academic year. It has become a permanent fixture on our academic life.

The theme for this year’s Institute—Total Engagement: Living the Andrews Story. President Andrea Luxton introduced us to the concept of stories, as a way for each of us to be connected to Andrews University – a place that we call Home! Our collective stories add to and enriches the Andrews story. Our stories matter. We belong!

This year plenaries will focus on Pause for Learning: The Gift of Cognitive Science and the Heart of the Andrews' Education. Pause for Learning will provide ways to create positive classroom experiences through strategies that avoid cognitive load and maximize engagement. The presentation on the Heart of the Andrews’ Education will provide opportunities for us to reflect on the question, what’s at the heart of an Andrews’ education? Why do we what we do? To what end?

This year’s Faculty Institute is the launch of an intentional plan to support faculty development via a range of workshops throughout this academic year. Many of our presenters are faculty, a choice by the Faculty Institute Committee that recognizes the giftedness of our academic community. Additionally, we continue to have highly recognized professionals as featured presenters and workshop facilitators. They will add to the intellectual stimulation of our academic community.

You, the faculty, are at the core of our academic community. The teaching and learning environment relies on your skills, knowledge and creativity. Our reputation in research depends on your willingness to engage in, create and sustain a culture of scholarship and inquiry. Our call to Live Wholly emphasizes that as a spiritual community, our success is measured by the extent to which students see how you, their mentors, live lives of faith within your disparate disciplines.

Thank you for what you do so well, every day. This Institute is one way of expressing our gratitude. We hope it gives you a broader repertoire of strategies to enhance the teaching-learning experience.

Our hope is that you will gain some new perspectives and ideas over the next day and a half, and that as a result of this shared time together we will be an even stronger academic community. We ask for your feedback. Please let us know what we did well, what we can do better, and share with us your ideas for future workshops and Institute sessions.

Thank you for your work. You are a valued member of our Andrews University academic community.

Sincerely,

Christon Arthur
Provost
