Proposal for Presentation
Humans are profoundly social beings. We have adapted and developed to form groups. Researchers find, for example, that the negative effects on health for people who lack social connections in their lives can be equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. One of the most profound things a teacher can do to maximize both learning and well-being is to ensure that students constantly receive belonging signals—small cues that tell them they and their efforts at learning are valued by the group. In this session we will study examples of how teachers build those belonging cues into the fabric of their classrooms and will build off the morning’s session to look at how classrooms that socialize better listening create an ideal environment for human thriving.
