Proposal for Presentation
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of standards that have been developed by educators and researchers to outline what students in K-12 in the United States should know by the end of each grade. Since the release of the standards in 2010, they have been adopted by 41 states and continue to be a politically charged topic. Some believe the standards allow for earlier detection of potential concerns in children’s development and learning as well as highlight the kind of skills employers look for in graduates. However, some argue that standards haven’t worked in the past and that most schools or teachers will be unable to live up to these lofty expectations. In order for these standards to be effective, high quality teacher training along with the time to receive that training must be in place. This poster presentation will aim to further explore the benefits and drawbacks of the Common Core State Standards.
