This paper reports initial results from a study encouraging student engagement in learning by the implementation of a self-correction exam question policy in a majors-level biology course primarily taken by freshman-level students. Students were given the opportunity to resubmit answers to 10% of the multiple-choice style questions from the sectional tests for the class. Over the course of the semester, an average of 45% of the students participated in the self-correction opportunity with the majority of students earning a net gain in points from the resubmission. The average test score after resubmission was 0.4% higher than before resubmission.
