Online learning has been a part of higher education and K-12 learn for over 15 years, yet we still struggle with process and quality. What are the expectations for faculty? For students? What does an institution need to know to get started, and how to stakeholders build, sustain and scale online programs? This keynote will take a look back at where we’ve been, provide lessons learned from direct experience, and give attendees ideas on how to successfully move forward with their own programs.

Dr. Darcy W. Hardy is Associate Vice President for Enterprise Consulting at Blackboard Inc. In this role, she leads a team of nationally-recognized experts in higher education, K-12, e-learning and distance education, information technology, open source technologies, outcomes and assessment, and analytics. The practice works with colleges, universities, systems and other higher education and K-12 organizations as they design, develop and grow their educational programs, and provides expertise in driving transformation and managing institutional change.

Prior to her position with Blackboard, Dr. Hardy spent over 25 years in public higher education, most recently serving as Assistant Vice Provost for Technology Education Initiatives at the University of Texas at San Antonio. From 1997 to 2010, Dr. Hardy served as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas System and Executive Director of the UT TeleCampus. The award-winning UT TeleCampus partnered with all 15 UT universities and health institutions to offer over 30 fully online programs, seeing approximately 20,000 enrollments annually. Under her direction, the UT TeleCampus was honored with dozens of state, regional and national awards from such organizations as USDLA, UCEA, TxDLA, WCET and the International Association of Business Communicators for courses, programming, communications, and faculty excellence.

Currently, Darcy serves as Chair Emerita with the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA), where she has been a member of the Board of Directors since 1999 and served as president in 2004/2005. She is the founder of the popular USDLA-sponsored International Forum for Women in E-Learning (IFWE), an event that focuses on issues faced by women in the industry as well as on the importance of networking and mentoring in the growth of women leaders for tomorrow.

Among many other awards, Dr. Hardy was inducted into the USDLA Hall of Fame in 2009 and received the Mildred and Charles Wedemeyer Outstanding Distance Learning Practitioner Award in Madison, Wisconsin in 2006. One of her most recent publications was a chapter in the book, Harnessing Innovation Technologies, which was chosen for the 2009 AERA Outstanding Research Publication Award sponsored by Division I. Another publication, Dancing on the Glass Ceiling: Women, Leadership and Technology, which she co-edited with Dr. Don Olcott, received the 2005 Charles Wedemeyer Publication Award from the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA).

Dr. Hardy has served and continues to serve on various editorial and advisory boards and has delivered hundreds of presentations, keynotes and workshops on distance education, online learning and leadership.
