Between Alienation and Citizenship The Evolution of Black West Indian Society in Panama, 1914-1964
Trevor O'Reggio
Between Alienation and Citizenship traces the history of the Black West Indian immigrant society in Panama from 1914 to 1964. Originally brought to Panama by the Americans and French as labor for the building of the Panama Canal, many of the workers stayed behind after completion of the canal to work for the Americans. Buffeted and battered by racism and prejudice from the Americans and xenophobia and chauvinism from the Panamanians, they created a thriving and even occasionally flourishing subculture and society. During much of the 50 years encompassed in this study, the Panamanian Black West Indian society existed in a kind of no man's land. The Panamanians were unwilling to accept them as full citizens even though many were born in Panama, and the Americans treated them as second-class citizens. The immigrants, also known as 'nowhereans,' faced this crisis of identity and homelessness with a steely determination and tenacity to survive. They established institutions, schools, churches, businesses, and profoundly changed the life and culture of Panama in ways that are still evident today. Between Alienation and Citizenship is a story of survival, tenacity, determination, and courage. (From Publisher Description)

Back to Revelation-Inspiration: Searching for the Cognitive Foundation of Christian Theology in a Postmodern World
Fernando Canale
In Back to Revelation-Inspiration, Fernando L. Canale, analyzes the two main ways in which Christianity has understood the origin of biblical knowledge. Canale proposes a way to overcome them by suggesting a new model of understanding that maximizes their strengths and avoids their weaknesses. By allowing us to see and use biblical knowledge in a new light, the new model uncovers a new foundation for theological knowledge. (Publisher description)

Hesban 06: Tell Hesban and Vicinity in the Iron Age
Paul J. Ray Jr.
"This volume presents a layer-by-layer account of the discoveries from the six Iron Age strata (12th through 5th centuries B.C.) at Tell Hesban, Jordan, with regional survey data from its immediate vicinity. Discoveries are interpreted in light of cultural, ethnological, and natural-science data as well as historical events. Implications of these finds for an understanding of the history of the biblical tribe of Reuben and the tribal kingdoms of Ammon and Moab are also examined. It includes a summary of the site and the surrounding region during the Late Bronze Age and Hellenistic periods as well as a chapter on the history of the excavation methodology of the Heshbon Expedition. There are numerous plans, photographs and pottery plates. The ceramic discussion compares the pottery of Tell Hesban with similar Iron Age forms found elsewhere in the Levant. The volume includes appendices of all loci, objects and faunal remains found in the Iron Age strata. An index is provided." AU Press catalogue

Madaba Plains Project 4: The 1992 Season at Tall al-'Umayri and Subsequent Studies
Larry G. Herr editor, Douglas R. Clark editor, Lawrence T. Geraty editor, Randall W. Younker editor, and Oystein Sakara LaBianca editor
"The fourth volume of the Madaba Plains Project series entitled Madaba Plains Project 'Umayri 4: The 1992 Season at Tall al-'Umayri and Subsequent Studies. ... This volume is dedicated to His Royal Highness Prince El-Hassan bin Talal of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan whose long-standing support of archaeology in Jordan has earned both admiration and deep respect. The field reports examine the Iron II/Persian Administrative Complex (Ch. 3), Western Defense System (Ch. 4), the Lower Southern Terrace (Ch. 5) and the Eastern Shelf (Ch. 6). These include stratigraphic information, section drawings and pottery plates. Detailed photographs and line drawings make the identification of the excavation phases clear. The pottery discussion compares the 'Umayri ceramics with other similar forms from MB II to Late Iron II/Persian found elsewhere in the Levant. The variety of objects found at 'Umayri show the diversity of human activity throughout the periods represented. These objects are presented in the preliminary report, along with other articles on the clay figurines, the reexamination of Cylinder Seal No. 3021 and two unique inscriptions." AU Press catalogue

Altar Call
Roy Gane
To many people who believe that Christ is coming again, his absence of almost 2,000 years is a mystery. But Altar Call explores ways to become acquainted with what he is doing in the control center of the universe. Through learning about Christ's ministry from the sanctuary services recorded in the Bible, we can enjoy interaction with him, experience his transforming power, and have confidence that we are at peace with God. Questions addressed in the book include: When you sin, do you have assurance that you are saved? How can you live a holy life? Why are you saved by grace through faith but judged by works? When does God's judgment begin and how does it affect your spiritual experience? What does God expect of you now?
Although Altar Call is based on nearly two decades of scholarly work, several features make it easy and enjoyable to read: (1) Clear language, many illustrations (humorous at times), some diagrams, and a study guide. (2) Direct encounter with the Bible itself. (3) Connects fresh scholarship with practical spirituality. (4) Explains step by step, without assuming that the reader begins with knowledge of the topic. (5) Forthrightly deals with highly controversial issues and challenges common assumptions, but in a positive way.

God's Faulty Heroes
Roy Gane
Judges is one of the most puzzling books in the Bible. Violence and apostasy mingle with miraculous deliverance and triumph. Valiant heroes for God loom larger than life, yet God's people slide into deeper and deeper depravity. Some of God's heroes themselves have problems. We admire Deborah and Barak, but aren't sure about Samson. Gideon's misdeed led Israel into idolatry, and Jepthan sacrificed his daughter. What possible purpose could the Holy Spirit have had in inspiring the writer to record such ghastly events? As we follow the struggles and victories and sorrows and joys of God's ancient people, we will realize that the story of Israel is also our story, and that Israel's God is our God.

Historical Foundations: Studies of Literary References to Hesban and Vicinity
Arthur J. Ferch, Malcolm B. Russell, and Werner K. Vyhmeister

A spectrum of periods are analyzed from their contemporary literary sources: pre-classical and classical sources (Werner K. Vyhmeister), Arab sources (Malcolm B. Russell), a review of critical studies of Old Testament references to the site (Arthur J. Ferch), and traveller's accounts since 1806 (Werner K. Vyhmeister)." AU Press catalogue
