P-57 Exploration of the Use of Di-Electric Electro-Active Polymer (DEAP) as a Large Strain Gage
Abstract
Electro-active polymers, EAPs, are polymers that exhibit a change in size or shape when stimulated by an electric field. They can be used as actuators or sensors. As actuators, they are characterized by the fact that they can undergo a large amount of deformation while sustaining large forces.
This materials could be used as a strain gage and be applied to devices that Physical Therapist (PT) could instruct their clients to use while working with them on rehabilitation of their muscle. With such devices, the PT could provide specific ‘numbers’ of stress needed for the rehabilitation of the affected muscle.
