Description

Andrews University is revamping the process of ensuring that all students engage in meaningful service learning. The new program will go into effect in the fall of 2020. This session will delve into opportunities for departments to partner with Student Life and Community Development to give students a chance to have experiential learning opportunities within their respective disciplines while meeting the UFO requirements. It will also provide faculty with updates on Change Day and the Andrews University Community Engagement Council.

Biography

Desmond Hartwell Murray is Associate Professor of Chemistry at Andrews University, Chemistry Instructor for Berrien County Math Science Center, Founder of Building Excellence in Science and Technology (BEST Early; www.bestearly.com), Lead Editor and Author of The Power and Promise of Early Research book, and Co-Chair of Andrews University Community Engagement Council. Murray has mentored over 1000 students in early research experiences he describes as ‘incubators of innovators.’ He has also incorporated community engagement into teaching and research via public science initiatives. His work was recognized in 2012 by the Michigan Science Teachers Association College Science Teacher of the Year award.

Teela Ruehle currently works as the assistant director of Service & Missions for Andrews University. Teela graduated from Andrews with her undergraduate degree in business management and completed her masters of social work. She has previously served as an Associate Dean in Lamson Hall and University Towers. She is passionate about service and the changes that it brings not just too local communities, but to the hearts, minds, and spirituality of those who are willing to engage in service.

Carlisle Sutton completed a Master of Science in Community and International Development, and a Master of Divinity at Andrews University. He was born and raised in the Caribbean. He is motivated by his growing understanding of the love of Christ, and aims to utilize his experience and knowledge to engage in meaningful, continuous, and relevant initiatives that demonstrate the disinterested love of Jesus to all, and help each individual achieve their highest potential.
