Abstract

Problem

Statistically the Malawi Union and its institutions are showing a negative labour turnover for the past five years. The problem is very pronounced in the health institutions where there were 104 employees lost at Blantyre Adventist Hospital and 106 employees at Malamulo Hospital. This is a drop from 645 to 435.

Method

I identified the supervisors, heads of institutions and health employees in Blantyre Adventist Hospital and Malamulo Hospital, both unmarried and married employees. Data was collected from these employees concerning human capital turnover from 2004 to 2009 through questionnaires, workshops and interviews. The data concerning worker retention was analyzed. Workshops and seminars to empower the supervisors and heads of Institutions in the area of leadership were designed. Collection of data on the employee turnover for the two years period were done also.

Results

The project study has revealed data on the causes for the problem of employee retention in the Blantyre Adventist Hospital and the Malamulo Hospital. These causes are related to how leadership handles human resource practices.

Conclusions

It appears that servant leadership is able to provide human capital practices which embrace systematic recruitment, induction, mentoring, development, training, disciplining, and leadership skills. This is a strategy for increasing employee retention. The approved dissertation will be shared with the interested stakeholders in the Malawi Union.
