Description

Trauma is an epidemic everywhere in the world, cutting across all demographics. Trauma occurs when a person experiences something that is perceived as physically or emotionally threatening, such as war, a natural disaster, divorce, or abuse. These experiences produce feelings of exceeding stress, terror, or helplessness, and these overwhelming circumstances can produce lasting effects upon the individual's mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

At the International Center for Trauma Education & Care, the main goal is to help facilitate long-term healing from trauma. We offer trauma-informed awareness, education, and tools to support healing in organizations, churches, and communities locally and across the world. The Center is dedicated to equipping people to meet trauma with the powerful message of restoration.

We aim to provide trauma education and care to a wide variety of populations and demographics, with perhaps a special burden for bringing trauma awareness into the Adventist church.

The first international trauma trip occurred in March, 2018. Partnering with ASAP Ministries, a small group of social work students traveled to Thailand to share trauma-informed knowledge, hope and God’s healing power with Karen Adventist Academy. One year later, a new group of social work students, professors, and alumni traveled to the Navajo reservation in Chinle, AZ over spring break of 2019. Here they provided trauma-informed information and skills to local children and adults, and also provided training workshops to Adventist teachers, pastors, and missionaries to better equip them for ministry to the Navajo people. In addition, groups have made domestic trips to present in churches and schools in Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, and North Carolina, as well as making local presentations to communities surrounding Andrews University. For its most recent international trip (August, 2019), the Center partnered with ASAP Ministries to take faculty and students to Ethiopia to provide trauma-informed training and care to refugees at a permanent camp. From there they traveled to an orphanage in Cambodia where the group provided training to staff and teachers from across Southeast Asia.

Over the last several years, roughly 1000 teachers, ministers, volunteers, children, and community members have experienced our trauma education workshops and trainings. Each time the information is well received and greatly appreciated.
