Proposal for Presentation

In this session we will review the need for prioritizing standards in the K-12 curriculum. We will model the identification process for essential standards (M. Mattos) using relevance, endurance, and leverage as our primary selection criteria. Our modeling segment will also include the process for unpacking standards and defining rigor utilizing resources from Departments of Education, professional organizations, highsStakes testing companies, and other educational sources. We will share how this deep understanding of rigor then translates into the creation of a student proficiency scale (R. Marzano). The final process that will be shared as part of our session incorporates how a school/district can go about vertically aligning individual course/grade level essential standards. Our session will discuss the identification and implementation of Essential Standards in both theory and in practice.
