Proposal for Presentation

The number of immigrant students in U.S. classrooms reached 630,000 in 2016. The language needs of immigrant students are often the focus of teacher preparation, but what else do newcomer students need to feel safe and welcome in their new classrooms, especially those students fleeing war, violence, and maltreatment? In this presentation, attendees will investigate the stories of four immigrant students and question how teachers can best help these students transition to a U.S. classroom. Attendees will learn to see their immigrant students holistically, as more than simply language learners, and will develop strategies for creating a welcoming classroom environment.
