Description
Obj. Reg. No. 698
Stratum: HR04
Material: Gold
Allocated to: Department of Antiquities
Notes: Mate to No. 670 minus the two gold balls; bent
Notes Reverse: 63 BC - AD 130
The earring now in envelop for 698 looks like 670. The back has a central wire affixed probably at top originally but has come loose, the bottom has a foil-like piece either bent up from bottom or affixed back there to which the central wire is attached with a loop at the end, bent up in such a way that something could dangle from it.
Lower on the same foil-like piece is an open loop or hook obviously for a dangle; and another piece indicating that the loop has broken off. A most interesting back.
The front has a piece extended below the sphere on which is a wire "V" with swirled ends. Single dots of gold mark the top of the swirls, the bottom of the "V" and two ends of the piece.
Center "nipple" in sphere is soldered on in some way solder is not evident.
Below the V and swirls is a piece soldered on (but hard for me to see) and folded back to make backing with loops.
Check with Amman example
"On 1534 + 1562, a flattened strip of gold ca. 0.2 cm. wide is flush against the inside of the disc (at the back). The top of this strip is left thick and it is bent into a small ring with one end placed over or under. The strip projects outwards opposite the dot and bends back on itself to form a loop. the bottom of the strip is twisted gracefully to form a ribbed loop turning back to graduate into a small round wire which is coiled once around the top ring."
"698 is the hemisphere with dot and a fragment of the wire for attachment of the ear. Field archaeologist believed...was mate to 670"
