Starting in 1848, Adventist had expanding and unfolding understanding of wholistic health embracing mental, emotional, physical and spiritual dimensions as the result of four visions by Ellen White. These visions covered the importance of proper nutrition, exercise, water, sunlight, temperance, fresh air, rest and trust in God. In 1865 Ellen White had her fourth vision on health that urged the establishment of an Adventist Health Institution. As a result the Western Health Reform Institute was opened in 1866 and became the first of many health institutes around the world until today the Adventist Health Ministry has the largest protestant system of hospitals and lifestyle centers in the world.
