Proposal for Presentation

"United by Emotion" was the motto of 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It emphasized the power of sport to unite people through their emotions. In this presentation, I will argue that education that appeals to emotions also unites diverse student populations. I will present the findings of my interdisciplinary doctoral dissertation and will demonstrate that the Gospel writers (and ancient writers) appealed to emotions of the readers to convey the message. Using the work of Martha Nussbaum, I assert that emotions are cognitive evaluative judgments. I will also demonstrate that appeal to emotions as cognitive evaluative judgments in teaching is very effective.
