Whether intentional or not, educators inevitably communicate cultural beliefs and traditions related to food and nutrition, particularly at the elementary level.

Steps can be taken to create an environment that fosters autonomy, inclusivity, mindfulness and health, while encouraging learners to have positive relationships with food.

These steps include collaboration and feedback from students on the ways they want to approach communal eating in the classroom and forming an intentional lexicon used talking about food.
