Proposal for Presentation

Schools hold a unique place of power over students, since students can be punished for what they say within the classroom. But outside the classroom, especially on social media, students may continue their conversations in harmful, offensive ways. Since these online conversations are likely to show back up in the classroom, a new debate has arisen on whether or not students can be punished for off-campus speech. This question goes to the heart of the 1st amendment, has been taken up by the supreme court, and as the covid-19 pandemic has forced many schools to operate online, it is more pressing than ever. This poster examines the debate on whether or not schools can sensor off-campus speech.
